The Fire, Weather, & Avalanche Center, otherwise referred to as FWAC, is a non-profit organization who’s mission is to bring proprietary and user-friendly products, services, and information to the public — with an emphasis on the backcountry. This includes wildfires, weather, and avalanches. FWAC is currently piloting a suite of products for the Pacific Northwest.
The real-time fire map shows detailed information of all current and active fires in the specific region you are viewing. Users can view active fires not just in the United States, but anywhere throughout the world.
FWAC's wildfire map categorizes the “fire” icons by color and shape — all which determine factors like the age, growth, size, status (active, contained, out, etc), and more.
Wildfires can have a severe impact on the air quality not just in the affected area, but in the communities within a vast area around it. It is vital information that affects public health and safety.
The legend will also provide the user information on lightning strikes in a particular region. Lightning strikes can, and often have been a catalyst to wildfires so it is important to know where, and how often they are occurring.
The wildfire map can be fully customized based on a list of filters to show specific pieces of data while hiding others. Creating an account on FWAC is completely free and will allow you to save your personalized fire map settings.
