Earth Day
Earth Day is a day to demonstrate and support clean living and a healthy environment for people and wildlife. It’s also a reminder of how fragile our planet is and how important it is to protect and care for it.
Did you know that before 1970 factories could spew harmful smoke into the air, dump toxic waste and chemicals into the nearest body of water without any consequences? It’s hard now to imagine factories operating without environmental codes or regulations to protect the environment.
After witnessing the impact of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day in the Spring of 1970 to enforce environmental issues on a national scale. What began as a teach-in on ecological problems led to the Earth Day movement, which launched a new era of environmental activism, with twenty million Americans marching across different cities. Senator Gaylord Nelson recruited students to maximize student participation and generate national awareness, which sparked national media attention and inspired twenty million Americans to march around different cities. By December 1970, Congress approved the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency to handle environmental issues.
KEEPING IT CLEAN
This year, True North Gear employees are dedicating time to honor and celebrate Earth Day by doing some light gardening and picking up litter around our building and Martin Luther King Jr. Way S. We will also do some light gardening around our building. While our gesture might not be grand, we hope it inspires others to do the same in their neighborhoods, workplace, and homes.
OUR PHILANTHROPY
At True North Gear, we are also putting our attention on helping the environment that you live and work in. We think that a safer landscape means fewer lives on the line along with healthier land, environment, and air. Because of this, we are proud to be working with 1% for the Planet. 1% for the Planet is a global movement that inspires thousands of businesses, nonprofit partners, and individual people in over 40 countries to support environmental solutions by having an annual membership and by doing everyday actions that matter.
The organization works to bring action and donations together to accelerate thoughtful environmental giving. So what does that mean? We will be donating 1% of all sales from our True North Gear product line to our partnership with American Forests.
AMERICAN FORESTS
We've chosen American Forests as our charity of choice through 1% for the Planet. We felt that their overall initiative was in line with our purpose as a company, which is to help keep our forests healthy, protected, and prosperous. As a result of our partnership, every dollar we donate will go towards planting one new tree across California, Colorado, and Arkansas. In addition to over 10,000 new trees planted through the course of the year, True North donations also fund proprietary research to identify optimal methods to promote long-term resilience to North American forests.
